Search Engine Optimization
Search engine optimisation or as it's more commonly known as; SEO, has many definitions, but thankfully only one primary objective - which is to afford your website the best possible chance of success in returned search engine result pages (SERPs).
We want to make something very clear, and that is, first and foremost, you should ALWAYS ready your website for your clients, prospects and readers - and not the search engines. However, your website still has to be understood and indexed by the search engines. The major search engines use computer programs known colloquially as ¨spiders¨ or ¨robots¨ to crawl and index websites - bear in mind, it is not a ¨right¨, but a privelage to be listed on search results pages, and indeed, to be even search indexed in the first place ought to be deemed a privelage.
The bottom line is search engines are crawling your site to determine it's value as a resource. Your website has no intrinsic value unless it is useful to your visitors. And here lies the rub - because it is essentially and initially, the ¨bots¨ and ¨spiders¨ who determine the value of your website (it is rather more complicated than this, but the statement will suffice as a basic explanation).
Search engine optimization, then, is the means by which the optimizer will present, to the search engines, your website information in a format which is clear, understandable, and which holds intrinsic value for search engine clients (people who use the search engine to find exactly what they are searching for).
The first thing to understand about search engines is that change is the dominant feature, or more correctly, continous improvement. Search engines are always working towards improving their search results - becuae after-all, if searchers can't or don't find what they are looking for, they will use other methods or search engines.
The key then to earning success in the search result pages is continous improvement - and this works both ways, in terms of search and you providing optimum value in giving your visitors an enhanced and satisfying website experience.
